Our Story

How it all started

Dexter Lake Church of God officially formed in August of 1967 with services being held in (at that time) the Emmett Township Fire Hall basement.  At that time, the church was named Cliff St Church of God due to its location.  A group of charter members launched the church on the east side of Battle Creek from the older Andrus St Church of God.  Over a span of several years the church outgrew the Fire Hall basement and purchased property for a new building.

Early Growth Years

The new building was finished in 1972, but services had actually started in the basement of that building in October, 1971.  At that time, the name was officially changed to Dexter Lake Church of God as we were adjacent to a lake of the same name.  It consisted of a modest sanctuary and a full basement with classrooms, kitchen and fellowship hall, located at the end of Evanston Ave in Battle Creek.  Soon after we purchased a parsonage adjacent to the property, with both parcels combined totaling greater than 5 acres.

Expanding the vision

As we grew, we expanded the facility in 1990 to include a classroom & office wing with a gymnasium.  The gymnasium ultimately became our new sanctuary for worship services, while the original sanctuary was used for Children’s Church.

Continued Growth

Growth continued and in 1999 we moved into our current facility on East Michigan Ave.  In subsequent years we built a Youth Building / Maintenance Garage and a Missions House.  All four buildings (including our Lead Pastor’s parsonage) sit on a 35 acre parcel.

Where we are headed

God has richly blessed us with a great heritage, property and leadership over the last 50+ years and we are excited about the future of Dexter Lake and how God is using us to minister to our surrounding communities and around the world.

We are a community of faith who TOGETHER, BELIEVE in Jesus Christ as God’s Son, seeking to GROW in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, using our gifts to lovingly SERVE Him and one another, while winning the lost, making disciples and equipping them for service.
